Yader Lopez and Karen Salgado live with their children (Jesús and Elvin) at such a high elevation that their farm’s coffee is harvested two months after the rest of the country due to the colder climate. That is a good thing in terms of the sweetness and complexity in the flavor profile of this coffee!
Yader and Karen dove into specialty coffee farming (as contrasted with commodity grade coffee farming) for the financial well-being of their kids. They used funds from coffee to buy a truck, but after becoming truck owners they decided to sell it and instead invest in more horses to help carry their coffee off their very steep and hard-to reach mountainside. We have been impressed with how consistently clean and nearly perfect this coffee is every single harvest. It has even been given the moniker “Perfectionist Microlot” for that very reason. Both our customers and our staff have become such big fans of Yader and Karen's microlots that we have purchased a sizable quantity for three years running -- and hopefully many more to come!
We purchase this coffee via the "direct trade" model through our friends at Gold Mountain Coffee Growers in Nicaragua. We pay a premium because this coffee and this family has earned a premium price. These higher prices have enabled this family (and many others like them) to significantly raise their standard of living in countless ways. When you drink this coffee, you are making a difference at origin.
