We're pleased to bring to you our second offering from the remarkable Long Miles Coffee Project. We plan to continue this relationship for years into the future, offering some of the best of Burundi's produce while supporting the worthy initiatives of the project.
This second offering comes from the Ninga washing station on Bumba hill in the province of Burundi. Seated at 1,900 MASL and flanked by the Nkokoma River is Ninga Washing Station. After realizing that coffee farmers from this region were traveling far and wide to reach a washing station with fair scales and that paid a fair price for coffee cherries, Ninga was born.
You have to cross over three rivers and pass by two province borders to reach Bumba hill. The farming communities that call Bumba home are far beyond the reach of clean drinking water and electricity. Coffee is the most important crop grown on the hill, closely competing with corn and beans. Step closer to the center of the hill and you’ll find a local market where people sell baskets full of freshly harvested crops and trade other household essentials. Only one primary school stands tall on Bumba hill.
This coffee an excellent example of the Long Miles take on natural (or dry) processed coffees. Ben and his team prefer to use the natural process to create subtle fruity flavor profiles. So no in-your-face and aggressively fruit-forward flavors -- rather, a nicely understated and clean dry process cup profile. It's a lovely change of pace from most other naturally processed lots.
Flavor Notes: Berry cobbler, baking spices, jammy & sweet
