For 2021, we are proud to be entering our third consecutive year of working directly with the San Lazaro farm. Finca San Lazaro sits high above the town of San Marcos de Colon near the border with Nicaragua. The coffee is grown in volcanic soil at approximately 1,600 meters above sea level within La Botija Biological Reserve.

Perhaps the most noteworthy aspects of this coffee are the people and the mission behind the beans themselves. The San Lazaro farm serves others through the non-profit ministry known as Mission Lazarus. Mission Lazarus provides many great opportunities for individuals and families in the region to not only learn skills that help improve their current circumstances, but also become catalyst for positive change that impacts others beyond the region.

In addition to the amazing coffee farm, they are home to a working ranch, artisan shop, hotel, and restaurant which employs over 50 people and generates 25% of their budget. This coffee is cultivated and processed by female agronomists, which adds yet another interesting wrinkle. Those employed on the farm are paid 25% above Fair Trade thresholds, and they even receive medical care as an added benefit.
Some of the folks involved with this effort are friends of friends, so this is a relationship that has been in the cultivation stages for at least two years.

Here's what you can expect from this coffee in 2021/22: Still some of the big, buttery toffee notes (think Werther’s Original), silky milk chocolate, and this time around a nice white-grape-like acidity. This is a nicely balanced coffee that is well suited to any brew method, but one that will really shine as a single-origin espresso.

Flavor Notes:  White Grape, Toffee Candy, Sweet & Tart
