We are thrilled to introduce this special coffee as a key addition to our coffee offerings. This is a fully washed coffee from the Matagalpa region of Nicaragua grown on the farm of “Pastor” Alejandro Picado. Alejandro is a member of the Las Nubes (The Clouds) Cooperative. The farms of Las Nubes dot the border between Matagalpa and Jinotega, high up into the mountains, far from the nearest town, and mostly off the electrical grid.
The relationship between Las Nubes and Gold Mountain Coffee Growers results in the highest prices co-op members have ever received for their coffee. Pastor Alejandro is single and uses the earnings from his microlot to support his extended family and make improvements to his house. Amazingly, on his small farm he has 12 varieties of coffee in various quantities. In fact, other farmers treat his farm as a seed bank and request seeds from him each harvest so that they can plant hard-to-find varieties.
Alejandro is very proud of the quality of his coffee and is constantly asking for cupping results from roasters. His cooperative, Las Nubes (The Clouds), is run by women who won leadership positions in elections. Many members said that they voted for women to run the co-op because they are prudent managers.
